Coloration, Eye Appeal, and Rarity in High Grades
The coloration ranges from pinkish rose gold to orange-gold, and some of the original, uncleaned pieces which are known can show very attractive color. The level of eye appeal is above average, and it should be fairly easy for the collector to find a nice looking 1891-S double eagle.
The 1891-S Double Eagle is relatively common in all grades up to and including MS63. MS64 pieces are scarce, about 225 graded, and do not trade frequently. Only four coins have been graded MS65 by PCGS and NGC combined. The Saddle Ridge Hoard only contained four coins of this date.
