1889-S Double Eagle: Rarity and High-Grade Survivors

The 1889-S Double Eagle is common in grades up to and including MS61 and only moderately scarce in MS63. It is quite rare in MS64 and less than a fifteen pieces have graded MS65. The Saddle Ridge Hoard did include some lustrous examples of this date in MS63 and MS64 that I was fortunate to handle.
