Grading and Rarity Profile of the 1885-CC Double Eagle
Until the 1980s, the 1885-CC double eagle was considered to be a rare date in nearly all grades. Its overall rarity has been lessened slightly by a number of coins that have been found in Europe and other overseas sources. It is now a little easier to find in EF and the lower AU grades. The 1885-CC remains scarce in properly graded AU55, and it is rare in AU58. There are an estimated five dozen known in uncirculated with nearly all in the MS60 to MS61 range. An MS62 is a very rare coin, and the finest known I know are three MS63’s.
