Assessing the Quality and Rarity of the 1883-S Double Eagle
The coloration on uncleaned, original pieces is most often a nice medium to deep rose-gold or orange-gold hue. The level of eye appeal on the typical 1883-S is below average due to the aforementioned surface marks. It is possible to locate a decent quality coin in the MS60 to MS62 range with good luster and color, but if you are a stickler for coins with clean surfaces, this quest can prove frustrating.
The 1883-S is not often seen in circulated grades, as it didn’t see much commercial use. It is common in MS60 to MS62 grades and only moderately scarce in MS63. It is very rare in MS64 with probably no more than thirty known at this level, PCGS and NGC have not graded one MS65 as of 02/19/23.
