1878-S Double Eagle: Overseas Finds and Mint State Rarity
As recently as the 1980s, the 1878-S was extremely scarce in uncirculated, but examples have been found overseas and brought back to the American coin market. Today, the 1878-S is often available in MS60 to MS61 and scarce in MS62 with less than 400 known. In properly graded MS63, this remains a rare issue with probably fewer than thirty known. It is exceedingly rare in MS64 with two to three known.
