1873-S Open 3 Discovery, Grades, and Collector Demand
Until recently, the 1873-S Open 3 Double Eagle was a rare coin in any grade. As it has become better known, a number of specimens have been discovered by collectors. In addition, small groups of these have been located in banks overseas.
This variety is still scarce in all grades and is most often seen in the lower About Uncirculated range. This issue becomes very scarce in AU58 and better. It appears the 1873-S Open 3 is rare in any grade higher than MS60.
