Surface Quality and Collector Premiums of the 1873 Open 3
It is possible to locate examples with relatively few serious marks on the surfaces and these coins invariably command strong premiums due to their popularity as type pieces. The luster on many 1873 Open 3 Double Eagles is excellent with a thick, frosty texture. The coloration on uncleaned, original specimens can range from coppery-orange to reddish-gold to medium green-gold. Some coins show Mint-made copper spots on their surfaces. These spots do not detract from the value of a coin unless they are extremely pronounced.
