A total of 25 Proof 1873 Closed 3 Double Eagles were struck. Approximately eight to ten pieces exist, and this issue is a great rarity. While a few of these Proofs are very choice, a number have been cleaned and/or slightly mishandled.

The 1873 Closed 3 Double Eagle is most often seen in Extremely Fine and the lower end About Uncirculated grades. While scarce in all grades, this variety is legitimately rare in higher grades. Most Uncirculated coins currently known show very heavy abrasions.
