1872-CC Double Eagle Survival and Condition Rarity
1872-CC Double Eagles with good eye appeal do exist, although they can be hard to locate. A coin which has good luster, a sharp strike and clean surfaces generally commands a very strong premium over a typical quality example.
Two die varieties are known. On the first, the mintmark is closely spaced while on the second the mintmark is wider. It is not known which of these two is rarer.
This date is scarce in lower grades. They become tougher to find in nice XF45 and are very scarce in AU55. The issue is a rare coin in AU58 and higher grades and is excessively rare in strict Mint State.
Condition Census: An 1872-CC Double Eagle which grades
MS61 qualifies as a Condition Census example of this date.
