1870 Double Eagle

The 1870 is one of the rarest Type Two Double Eagles meaning this coin is scarce in all grades and very rare in premium quality. However, it still commands only a relatively small premium over other dates of this type which are far more available. Many seasoned numismatists believe that the 1870 Double Eagle is an exceedingly undervalued coin. This coin is considered by me to be a sleeper!
Strike Characteristics, Surface Quality, and Eye Appeal
This date generally shows an acceptable strike. While Liberty’s hair is not usually well defined, the stars and other border details are quite sharp. The reverse is very well struck with no major areas of weakness. Many 1870 Double Eagles have significant bag abrasions on their surfaces, but it is possible to locate some clean, wholesome examples. Such coins are rare and often command a very high premium over ‘typical’ pieces. The luster on most 1870 Double Eagles are good with a thick, frosty texture often found on uncleaned, minimally worn specimens. This date can be located with above average eye appeal. The date collector should be advised: ‘high end’ 1870 Double Eagles are quite popular. No significant die varieties are known to exist.
