1869-S Double Eagle Varieties and Rarity Rankings
Two die varieties are known to exist. The more common has a normal reverse die. The rarer of the two has doubling on the reverse which can be seen most clearly represented on STATES OF and on the seven upper stars.
The 1869-S Double Eagle is plentiful in Very Fine and Extremely Fine grades. It becomes scarcer in AU58. A tiny handful of very choice Uncirculated coins are known, and these are greatly prized by their current owners.
Condition Census: To be in the Condition Census, an 1869-S
Double Eagle must grade at least MS63.
