1869 Double Eagle Proof and Grade Rarity
Only 25 Proofs were struck. Between 10 and 12 pieces are estimated to have survived. One of these is a spectacular PR66 coin. The gold coins of 1869 are one of the finest Proof Type Two Double Eagles of any date which is known to exist.
The 1869 Double Eagle is most often found in Extremely Fine grades. It is moderately scarce in the lower About Uncirculated grades and becomes quite rare in the highest About Uncirculated grades (AU58 and AU58+). Mint State coins are very rare, although they are more available than the 1868. A few very nice Uncirculated coins exist as well as a gorgeous Gem (graded MS65 by PCGS). The Gem was once included in the famous Norman Stack type set of United States coins.
