1868-S Double Eagle Characteristics and Grade Rarity
No significant die varieties are known. The mintmark is very small, squat, and positioned over the right serif of the N in TWENTY.
The 1868-S Double Eagle is a fairly common coin in lower grades. The typical example is an unattractive, heavily marked Very Fine to Extremely Fine. The majority of the About Uncirculated 1868-S Double Eagles are AU50 coins which, once again, have liberal marks and little eye appeal. This date becomes very scarce in MS60 and in higher grades the 1868-S is very rare.
