A total of 25 Proof 1868 Double Eagles were struck. Approximately 12 of these are known today. A higher number of Proofs have been certified by the two major grading services, but this almost certainly represents numerous appearances of the same coins.

Most 1868 Double Eagles grade Extremely Fine. This is a scarce date in About Uncirculated and the great majority of survivors in this grade range are no better than AU53. The 1868 Double Eagle is rare in AU55 and AU58; it is extremely rare in Mint State.
