1867-S Double Eagle: Eye Appeal & Grade Rarity
The coins from this year are some of the most difficult Type Two Double Eagles to find with good eye appeal. The mediocre strike, heavy bag marks, and subdued luster seen on most pieces do not make for very attractive coins. Any very choice higher grade example should be purchased by the serious collector as it may take many months to locate another.
The mintmark on 1867-S is tiny and located over the right serif of the N in TWENTY.
The 1867-S Double Eagles are scarce in all grades. The typical specimen grades Extremely Fine. About Uncirculated coins are about the best quality which the average collector can locate. This is a rare coin in full Mint State.
