1867 Double Eagle: Survivor Grades & Mint State Rarity
The 1867 Double Eagle’s typical survivor grades AU50 or a bit better and are characterized by heavily abraded surfaces. A sizable hoard of nice quality coins was discovered in Europe in the mid-1960’s. These coins have no real wear but are frequently heavily marked. Mint State 1867 Double Eagles can be obtained, but finding a pleasing piece may take considerable effort. Most of these pieces grade MS60 to MS61. Any 1867 Double Eagle grading MS62+ or above is very rare.
