1866-S With Motto Double Eagle Mintmark & Rarity
All genuine 1866-S With Motto Double Eagles have a tiny mintmark which is positioned atop the right serif of the N in TWENTY. Many pieces have a network of fine die cracks which join the lettering on the reverse. These are mint-made, and they do not detract from the value of a coin.
While some very appealing 1866-S With Motto Double Eagles are known, many of the specimens offered to collectors have poor eye appeal. Very attractive pieces are very hard to find, regardless of their grade, and they typically command a hefty premium.
This date is scarce in all grades. Usually found in Very Fine to Extremely Fine grades, About Uncirculated 1866-S Double Eagles almost always qualify at the lower end of this grade range. This year is very rare in AU58 and extremely rare in full Mint State.
