1866 Double Eagle Survival & Condition Rarity
This date is fairly easy to locate in Extremely Fine and average quality. About Uncirculated pieces exist in significant quantities. The 1866 Double Eagle becomes scarce in the higher About Uncirculated grades and lower mint state grades. In Mint State of 62 and better, the 1866 Double Eagle is a very rare coin with only 14 having been seen by PCGS and NGC as of April 15, 2022. These coins would be considered condition census. The two Smithsonian specimens are graded at MS61 and AU53. The proof specimen is graded PF64 deep cameo.

Census for this issue, a coin must grade at least MS62.
